Indian Institutes of Technology
From ePedia, the electronic encyclopedia
The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are tertiary educational institutes established by the Government of India to offer undergraduate, integrated postgraduate and postgraduate degrees and the Doctor of Philosophy in over 25 different engineering, technology and business/management disciplines. The emphasis is on undergraduate education rather than on research.
The seven IITs are located in:
Chennai - IIT Madras
Guwahati - IIT Guwahati
Kanpur - IIT Kanpur
Kharagpur - IIT Kharagpur
Mumbai - IIT Bombay
New Delhi - IIT Delhi
Roorkee - IIT Roorkee
The related Indian Institute of Science is a post-graduate institution focussed on research and advanced instruction. (There are also six Indian Institutes of Management.)
There are about 2500 undergraduate and 1500 graduate students in each IIT (except Guwahati, which is presently half this size, but increasing every year). In modern age no other institution in India has had such an immense influence on Indian mind, as does IIT.
Students/alumni are informally referred to as IITians with several alumni organizations active all over the world, for example the IIT Alumni Association of North Texas.
